background and story
playze started as a project to explore the possibilities of mobility, intercultural exchanges and global market niches. by building up a network that ranges from locally connected individuals to so-called neo-nomads the set-up investigates on the shift of importance, in our built and unbuilt environments.
throughout its first years, playze faced different spatial adventures, varying in scale, time, clients' expectations, and happening in various social, cultural and economocal fields. the initiating actions of our journey are taking place in very active and vibrating cities of our times , namely berlin and shanghai.
berlin has through its history been confronted with the necessity to redefine its political, social and cultural role and therefore gained strength and a certain routine in reviving, while keeping its strong identity. shanghai is not only redefining its character in the last two decades , but expands in such an unusual way, that new social, cultural and economical terrains are encountered constantly.
on one side berlin, the "city of design" (unesco) and a playground for young european culturepreneurs, constitutes a fertile ambiance for playze. on the
other side shanghai, one big motor for a nation of 1.3 billion people, that allows us to experience a different pace and scales , that are unthinkable in other parts of the world.
the way playze is working and is organized could be related to the model of the foam . the different bubbles form a foam-like net structure which is not organized concentrically, but takes its benefit in its openness and ability to extend towards all directions and form new neighbourhoods . a primary aspect of our work is the exchange of knowledge and information through the whole network. playze is a conglomerate of individuals ,who are having different educational and cultural backgrounds. the hierarchies are held as flat as possible and our
activities in spatial design range from teachIng and research to the classIc executlon of the profession of architects.
