Probably the most complex façade we have ever designed.

In order to cope with the complexity of the spatial allocation and coordination of the structure, curtain-wall, secondary structure and ceramic skin of our Ningbo Urban Planning Exhibition Centre a tailor-made computer script had to be coded. The script automatically generated a 3D model of the structure and façade. As the idea was to use traditional ceramics for the skin, we went in search of producers all over China. But we quickly realised that our digital planning was in stark contrast to the impressive traditional production methods we found. We therefore had to simplify our planning so that it could be implemented without losing the quality of traditional craftsmanship. Finally, the tectonics and tactile appearance of the building is a result of both – digital technologies and traditional crafts.
